Glossy Box April Edition

It feels like I haven’t written a Glossy Box post for a while. Maybe because I completely forgot to write my Harrod’s one. Seriously, I’m going to be better at blogging from now on.

I received my Glossy Box after work sent me home for being poorly. This gave a happy point to my day, when I felt like I just wanted to curl up and sleep for a really really long time. I cracked open the cardboard box, to discover a biodegradable box inside. What could the theme be this time?

On seperating both the lid and the bottom of the box, a card popped out, celebrating that it was spring time and that the box theme this time around was nature. Immediately, aloe vera and coconut oil spring to mind and I was looking forward to claiming some natural products, which will aid and complement my beauty regime.

These were no where to be seen, but rather ‘natural products’ were those made of natural ingredients. I wasn’t sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. But here’s what was in my box this month:

1. Caudalie Vinosource SOS Thirst-Quenching Serum

What Glossy Box says about it: This newly-launched ultra-concentrated serum is extremely natural and plant-based, ensuring your skin never lacks moisture.

What Franno says about it: To be honest, I don’t have problems with ‘hydrating my skin’. I have normal skin, not dry or combination skin, so I don’t really understand why I received this product when I answered that I had normal skin in my questionnaire. Nevertheless, when I applied it, it did sink in extremely quickly and my skin felt smoother straight away. It is fragrance free, which is a bonus – I hate overpowering products and, because this is meant to be applied underneath a moisturiser, smelling of coconut, this is a definite plus to not make my face stink of all different fragrances at once!

2. Inika Cosmetics Certified Organic Lip Liner:

What Glossy Box says about it: A blend of cold pressed plant waxes, oils and natural pigments provides outstanding colour performance.

What Franno says about it: I received my lip liner in 03 Sugar Plum, which is a dark brown colour with a slight pinkish shimmer. I have to say, this colour is not for me at all. However, my swatch stayed on my hand for an extremely long time, so although this isn’t my colour, I trust that if I got another colour, the lasting power would be awesome.

3. Monu Professional Skincare Hand & Nail Cream:

What Glossy Box says about it: A rich treatment cream, which leaves hands soft, and nails and cuticles conditioned and healthy.

What Franno says about it: Hey, didn’t I receive this a couple of boxes ago?! Not cool, GB… The product takes a while to sink into the skin, which I suppose is a plus because if you use hand cream (I don’t, by the way…), you’d want it to feel like it was lasting a while. The smell of this reminds me of the anti-wax stuff my beautician uses on my legs after a wax. Not a particularly pleasant smell, but it appears to get better when the product sinks in.

4. Figs & Rouge Lip Balm:

What Glossy Box says about it: 100% Pure, 100% Natural and 100% Organic Multipurpose balm. Excellent for Soothing and Naturally Hydrating dry Lips & Skin!

What Franno says about it: I think this product will be the only one in my box that I’ll get any use out of for this month. I needed some lip balm as it was, and this one smells of gorgeous peppermint and tea tree. It’s a lovely clear balm, which I would apply over any drying lipstick and I would probably wear a massive layer of this over my lips overnight, as a bit more of an intensive lip conditioner.

5. Philip B Styling Gel:

What Glossy Box says about it: Philip B Styling Gel is a multi-purpose, supple, soft-hold gel that adds volume and texture, and gives definition and control to all hair types.

What Franno says about it: I’m still not sure about this product. I think if I had long hair, I would be pretty disappointed with this product however, I don’t, so I think I probably would use it to give my hair a little bit more texture. Again, a fragrance free product so, so far, so good. I don’t know how well it will hold though…

This is my blog and I like to give my honest opinion so that others can benefit and, personally, I feel like I’m getting the rubbish end of the Glossy Box deal. I’m usually quite late in receiving my box every month (although I have been a subscriber for 8 months now) and the products in my box do not fair with products that other subscribers’ boxes. I have been reading other reviews and have found that a few others feel this as well. Perhaps the ’lesser known’ bloggers, like myself, are feeling this too.

This box was really late – it is May next week and what used to be a mid-month treat continues not to deliver on time. I received an email around the time I was meant to receive my box, saying that due to the bank holidays, dispatch will be late. Why? If it was sent on time, with all the holidays, it probably would have been delivered around the same time (if not, earlier) anyway!

I don’t know, I just think I’m getting a little frustrated with Glossy Box. Despite the ‘themes’, I have received near enough the same products every month and it’s not feeling much like an investment or exciting anymore. One more box, I think, and then I’ll probably cancel and subscribe somewhere else for a while.

Did you receive a good Glossy Box? Have you subscribed to another beauty box? Which would you recommend?

Glossy Box January 2012: Valentine’s Edition

This month’s Glossy Box arrived a little later than usual this month, what with Christmas and all other goings-on. I didn’t mind because this gave them an excuse to tie the theme with Valentine’s Day and pampering oneself for the ‘special day’. I don’t really agree with Valentine’s Day as a concept. I think it’s a waste of time and (more importantly) money. But I wouldn’t say no to a bunch of roses and box of chocolates. I am a woman after all. In fact, I think I wrote a post on Valentine’s day last year… I did here!

I have decided to write my Glossy Box posts a bit differently from now on, so I hope you like the new format :) Our box for this month was bright pink. Glossy Box is spoiling us with the range of colours with the bold red Christmas box and now this pretty in pink Valentine’s box. These are a lot more eye catching than the dull baby pink boxes we have received previously and I think it makes the company appear more young and fresh.20120210-110358.jpg

What did I get in my Glossy Box to depict such a pampering occasion? To ensure I looked amazing on our inevitable date night? – I should make an effort; well, it is Valentine’s Day…

1. Eyeko Skinny Eyeliner20120210-110530.jpg

What Glossy Box says about it: Get a handle on your eyeliner for precise definition and intense colour with a long-lasting finish.
What Franno thinks about it: I got my eyeliner in Emerald Green, which I was a little apprehensive about. Does green eyeliner suit blue eyes? And it’s not a dull green either; emerald green. This is how it swatches: 20120210-110517.jpgI tried it on anyways, to see how the product felt and regardless of the colour, if I would purchase this product again in a different one. I’ve been trying to take photos of my eyes with this eyeliner, but the light’s not been right. I would say the eyeliner is easy to apply (well, duh, it’s pencil eyeliner…) and doesn’t seem to move when it has been applied, which is a bonus and what is looked for in an eyeliner. The colour when applied actually didn’t look too bad with my blue eyes and the swatch actually appeared a lot brighter than it looked on my eyes. I’m sure that, when used with eyeshadow (which I didn’t for reviewing purposes), it’ll look completely fine when blended in.

2. Clarins Extra Firming Night Cream20120210-110507.jpg

What Glossy Box says about it: Clarins intensive night-time skin renewal complex.
What Franno thinks about it: I already use a night time treatment from The Body Shop’s Seaweed treatment and I have been reaping the benefits of lovely smooth skin in the morning, so I’m not particularly looking at changing this. The most intriguing part of this for me was the ‘extra firming’ bit. I don’t think I’ve ever used a lotion or potion for ‘firming’ and I wanted to know what it felt like. I tried it for a couple of nights and I preferred this texture to what I’m actually using as my night time treatment at the moment. I might swap over. After a couple of nights, I can’t say that I noticed ‘firmness’ in my face, but you never know – after a few months, it might make a difference to my saggy cheeks.

3. Clarins Extra Firming Day Cream - sorry the picture is the wrong way… I’m having a bad technology week, this week that even rotating pictures is proving to be difficult…

20120210-110453.jpg

What Glossy Box says about it: Infusing skin with firming benefits that are immediate and long-lasting.
What Franno thinks about it: Again, I wanted to try this for the ‘firming’ effect and see what actually happened and, after my success with the night time treatment, I had high hopes for this one. Again, I didn’t particularly need a day cream, but it’s Clarins and that’s a reputable brand, so why not give it a go – I might like it. The consistency is quite thick and I was worried it would take some time to sink into my skin, but I was pleasantly surprised. My skin felt moisturised straight away but again, after a couple of uses, I couldn’t really feel ‘firmed up’ – I’m sure this would be different if I used this product more.

4. Fab Gentle Body Wash20120210-110435.jpg

What Glossy Box says about it: The ultimate travel companion for all skin types that provides irritant-free cleansing and hydration.
What Franno thinks about it: To be honest, I didn’t really want to try this one out because it’s the perfect size for when I go on holiday this year! And upon inspection, I realised this product wasn’t a body wash at all, but a ‘daily treatment body moisturiser!’ It’s fragrance free and seems awesome so I’ll be using this for holiday when I’m getting a tan and looking to keep it forever and ever! :)

5. Murad Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer – dewy finish 20120210-110424.jpg

What Glossy Box says about it: Oil-free primer ignites a radiant glow, powered by light enhancing minerals

20120210-110411.jpg

What Franno thinks about it: I think this was a bit of a cop out from Glossy Box. In the last box, I was also sent a primer by MeMeMe, which I am using successfully at the moment. Nevertheless, I thought I’d give it a go, both with and without make up, to see if they had any different effect on my skin. I have never tried a skin-coloured primer before and I was a bit apprehensive about trying this. But, when I applied it to my hand, I was quite impressed with how easily this product blends with your natural skin colour, and I can’t wait to try it under my make up to see if it makes any difference there. It does have a dewy finish on my hand, which is great if you are keeping in with the natural look – I generally am, unless I’m going out-out.

I wouldn’t say this was the most romantic of boxes. Firming cream? Really? But I am pretty chuffed with this month’s box. All of the brands I have at least heard of, which is more than what has been in previous boxes, which I am loving. I am still a subscriber and haven’t been swayed by the welcome of new beauty boxes on the scene, as I think Glossy Box is one of the best out there for good range of products and brand names.I still have to write about what Jay got in his Glossy Box for Men – it’s in my drafts, I’ve just not had the time to take the photos and stuffs! Soz peeps. At this rate, I’ll be writing about his March Glossy Box for Men instead!

What did you receive in your Glossy Box this month? Did you enjoy your products? What did you get in any of the other beauty boxes you may have subscribed to?

December Glossy Box

Oscar is having a quick nap before bed – I know, I think he sleeps too much too – so I thought I’d write a quick post about this month’s Glossy Box. Please excuse the lack of photos; it’s so dark in here, my iPhone isn’t charged and I don’t know how long he’s going to be asleep for, so I’m being super speedy!

Hurrah! Gifts to open before Christmas! I was super impressed with what was in my box this month. No perfume samples in sight and most products were make up related. Well done, Glossy Box; I know they got a lot of negative feedback about the November box, but it seems like they’ve taken whatever was said on board and really come up with an amazing box.

What was in my box this month? Firstly, MeMeMe‘s Seventh Heaven, which is ‘a luxurious moisturising facebase enriched with active nutrients and extracts to prime and nourish the skin’. Basically, a primer. My goodness, does it smell amazing though?! It’s so citrusy and fresh. I can’t wait to try it – both on it’s own to moisturise and brighten up my skin, and with my foundation, just to test it’s staying power.

Secondly, I received Rituals Foaming Shower Gel – can’t find the website for this, sorry; but my card does say you can buy it at department stores. My scent is in ‘Yogi Flow – Indian Rose and Sweet Almond Oil’. This was actually good timing, as I just ran out of shower gel! Hooray! I have never tried a foam in the shower before, but it smells awesome and again, I look forward to trying it.

Next, and possibly the most impressive content of the box, we have the Blink+Go‘s Hi-Definition Mascara. It is in a massive tube! Honestly, I’ve never seen a mascara as big as this! This mascara claims to ‘Give your natural lashes a stunning flake-free, waterproof boost’. I haven’t heard of Blink+Go before but I look trying out new mascaras, although I’m quite happy with my Barry M for now… Maybe this will be an occasion mascara :)

Fourth is one of Cargo Cosmetics‘ Classic Lip Gloss. Mine is in the shade ‘Tokyo’, which is a lovely medium pink that you can wear with pretty much anything and the sample size is amazing for when I fancy just bringing my purse out and not a massive bag. It’s fragrance-free and high-shine without glitter.

Lastly, I got me a glitter nail varnish from Deborah Lippmann, in the shade ‘Razzle Dazzle’ which also accompanies a nail varnish remover mitt. There’s no website for this one, but you can find them at House of Fraser. I don’t really wear glitter varnish, but I have to say, it’s in a gorgeous plum colour (similar to my Barry M Raspberry colour) and I think it’ll be amazing for going to parties and stuffs. I haven’t opened the mitt yet… I haven’t used a remover mitt before, I’m a cotton pads remover girl… But I’m willing to give it a go, and hopefully it’ll be quicker; not that the time it takes to remove nail varnish annoys me, but that’ll be the only factor to make me change my ways, I guess.

I am super chuffed with this box! I think I will use absolutely everything in it more than once. All samples are a good size, but I think it’s because most of them are in fact full sized products! Jay’s Glossy Box for Men arrived but I wasn’t in to sign for it – I’m picking it up at the post office tomorrow and we’ll see what’s in there as well and I will write it up in case anyone wants to subscribe for their boyfriends :) If you want to subscribe, ask me for a link so I get some ‘recommend a friend’ Glossy points!

Sorry I’ve been crap at blogging (and tweeting!) recently; Oscar is taking up a lot more of my time than I thought! I have to keep watch of him all day else he runs off and chews the Christmas tree lights or leaves me ‘presents’… Hopefully, we’ll have the house training down by next week and I’ll be back online a bit more!
